Obedience Training For Dogs

Obedience Training For DogsHaving an obedient dog can not only save a lot of time and frustration, it can also bring a lot of love and compassion to the relationship between you and your dog – it’s for these reasons that obedience training for dogs is so important.

One of the major benefits which can be noticed through obedience training for dogs is an increase in communication and understanding between you and your dog. Communicating with your dog and understanding your dog’s body language are a couple of the keys to successful obedience training for dogs.

Even though dogs have been living in society with humans for thousands of years, they are still animals and as such they often behave in ways that are unacceptable to humans. Disobedient dogs can cause significant damage to your house, property, furniture and can even be a real danger to humans.

Obedience training for dogs while they are still puppies gets best results. A few basic commands that you could teach your dog include:

  • Sit
  • Stay
  • Down
  • Come
  • Stand

Teaching these commands can be done quite easily if you are persistent and consistent in your training methods. On the following page I will give more detail about how you can teach these commands to your dog.

For obedience training for dogs to be successful, it’s vital that you establish the position as the “Alpha Dog” in your household. This needs to be understood by both you and your dog. Good behavior and obedience to basic commands shows that your dog is respecting you. Being overly tough on your dog and using extreme punishments to control bad behavior isn’t needed to maintain Alpha Dog status. Consistency during training will often achieve this.

Before I move on to talk about the actual methods of obedience training for dogs, its useful to talk a little about training times and routines. As a general rule, your dog will get restless if training lasts for more than 30 minutes. To start with, puppy training will need to be a much shorter time span. You may find that initially your puppy may not be able to stay focused for more than 5 – 10 minutes at a time. Slowly build your way up 30 minutes and always finish training by having fun with your dog. You could play with their favorite toy, or give them affection so that they start to associate training as a fun (but serious) time.

On the next page we will discuss exactly how to train these 5 basic commands to your dog.
