They type of hunting that these dogs are best equipped for varies. Some such as the English Setter and the English Cocker Spaniel for example make great gun dogs (dogs used for hunting small game such as ducks etc). Others such as the Whippet and Coonhound make good sight and scent dogs respectively. Choosing a breed of dog that is appropriate for the hunting you have in mind is the first step which will make hunting dog training so much easier and more natural.

2. Retrieving
3. Steadying
4. Marking

In-field training can take place once all of the basic commands are understood. Your dog can then “learn on the job” by either following other dogs you may have or by slowly understanding the way you operate. Discipline your dog and reward your dog for good behaviour in the field. Hunting dog training doesn’t need to be difficult if a little perseverance and patients are shown.

Depending on the type of hunting your dog will be doing, learning the scent of they prey may be another very important part of hunting dog training. The only way a dog can learn the scent is by being taught using a real animal. You can do this using an animal that you have caught or by allowing your dog to get up close and personal with the real target animal during in field training.

By training your dog to first master basic obedience and then teaching your dog in the field you will be able to get great results from your hunting dog training. Persevere with your efforts and your will see great results.
