To learn how to stop dogs from digging in your yard its important to understand why dogs are digging in the first place. Dogs like to dig for a number of reasons. Some of those reasons include a lack of exercise, boredom, separation anxiety and wanting to escape.

Given that we know the most common reasons that dogs dig, we can also define some practical solutions that are likely to help us answer the question "how to stop dogs from digging". If for example your dog is digging because he is lacking exercise, you may be able to stop the digging entirely by playing with your dog or taking him for a walk for 30 minutes each day. If boredom is the problem, consider buying some toys for your dog that will entertain him. Chew toys, balls and bones are all good options. A dog that is constantly trying to escape may need to be tied up or kept inside.

Some dogs like to dig for the sake of digging. If that’s the case with your dog, the following tips might help curb your dogs digging habits:

  • Don’t give your dog access to the yard. This is the only way you’ll be able to guarantee no digging.
  • Plant tougher, more resilient plants in your garden. Roses are great as they have there own thorny defence mechanisms.
  • Use a dog digging deterrent. A range of these products exist, some come in the form of sprays, others as powders. Either way, using these products will cease your dogs digging in most cases almost instantly.
  • Booby trap the yard. Bury balloons in your dogs favourite digging area, the fright your dg gets when one of these pops may be enough to put him off digging permanently!

If these methods don’t work for you, you might want to consider allocating your dog an area of turf that is suitable for digging. You can then allow digging but only in this area. It’s often a win-win for both the dog and the master.

If you don’t happen to have any spare yard space that you want your dog digging in or you just don’t like the idea, you might want to consider building your dog its very own “dig-box”. Depending on the size of your dog, this may or may not be possible. If you have a small dog, you could easily set up a dig-box which consists of dirt, leaves, some grass etc. Encourage your dog to dig there through burying treats in the dirt and by digging there yourself – in no time your garden will be safe again.

Keep in mind that some dogs love to dig, and that by totally restricting this behaviour your dog will not be as happy and will not be able to fully express itself.

Hopefully by using the tips mentioned about you are able to answer the frustrating question "how to stop dogs from digging" and not need to deal with this anymore - just remember, pracitce and persistance makes perfect!.
