Golden Retriever Training

Note: This is page 2 of Golden Retriever Training, page 1 is here: Training a Golden Retriever

Introduce your Golden Retriever to a consistent set of Daily Routines.

Whether you are training a Golden Retriever puppy or and adult Golden Retriever, the first step is always to establish a common set of daily routines - this is an essential part of Golden Retriever Training. This includes when to feed your dog and where, when you will take him/her outside and when they need to go to the toilet (if your Golden Retriever is not yet potty trained I will cover that in a second). Where your dog sleeps and when it goes to bed are also important aspects to consider during the early stages of Golden retriever training.

The next logical step of Golden Retriever training is potty training. You can teach your dog when and where to pee using a couple of methods. For the purpose of this article we will just focus on crate training. Crate training is when you train your dog to only go to the toilet when it is outside or when you take him to the toilet. The basic process is based around the fact that dogs don’t like to go to the toilet where they sleep. When the dog is not being watched closely, it should remain in its crate/cage. Once potty training your Golden Retriever is taken care of, its time to teach your Golden Retriever to sit. Sitting is one of the most important commands as it is the fundamental action for a lot of more advanced commands. One way you can teach your Golden Retriever to sit is to stand next to him and say the word “Sit”, follow this by gently pushing his/her backside down into the sitting position. Once the position is achieved praise your dog and give it a treat!

Practice this over and over until your dog fully understands the command – now it’s time to move onto another important command. The Stay command.

One common way to teach your Golden Retriever to stay is to first command that he sits in the sitting position. Place a treat about 1 meter in front of your dog and say “Stay”. If you dog begins to approach the treat repeat to him “No, Sit”, followed by “Stay”. Reward your dog once he has been able to stay for more than a few seconds. Slowly work upwards from here, get your dog to stay for 10 seconds and gradually move further away from your dog. Leave the treat in the same place and repeat the command. If your dog approaches you repeat the “Sit – Stay” command. Your dog will soon begin to understand that even if you are not close to him you can still see him.

Now that you have taught your Golden Retriever to sit and stay, the next step in Golden Retriever Training is to start defining house boundary rules. If for example you decide that your Golden Retriever is not allowed in the lounge of your house, next time he approaches the door give a firm “Sit – Stay” command. Do this every time your Golden Retriever starts entering somewhere it really shouldn’t.

It won’t take long for your Golden Retriever to understand you once you have the two basic sit and stay commands mastered. Use these as building blocks for more advanced Golden Retriever training.

One of the most effective ways to improve the relationship you have with your Golden Retriever is to continue teaching it all the time. Professional Golden Retriever training is a good option to further advance your dog, another even better option is to train your dog yourself using a guide. We recommend downloading Secrets to Dog Training which is an in depth and detailed training guide which provides you with step by step instructions for Golden Retriever training.

Another option for Golden Retriever training is a book called Dog Training Zone. Although we don’t rate it as highly as Secrets to Dog Training with regards to training a Golden Retriever – it is still a fantastic guide.
